The even-spacing formula
exact spacing = wall width ÷ spaces · battens = spaces + 1
clear gap = exact spacing − batten width
A 12-foot wall at a 16-inch target works out to 9 spaces at exactly 16 inches — 10 battens. A 13-foot wall adjusts to 15.6 inches so everything still lands evenly. Nobody can eyeball a half-inch spacing difference, but everyone notices a skinny last panel.

Common batten spacing is 12 to 24 inches on center, with 16 inches the most popular for interior accent walls. The trick is adjusting the spacing slightly so battens land evenly across your exact wall width — this calculator solves that math for you.
What size boards are used for board and batten?+
For interior accent walls: 1×3 or 1×4 battens (2½–3½ inches wide) over drywall or a plywood base. For exteriors: 1×10 or 1×12 boards with 1×2 or 1×3 battens covering the gaps. MDF is the budget interior choice; primed pine and PVC resist moisture better.
How do I make batten spacing come out even?+
Decide a target spacing, divide the wall width by it, round to the nearest whole number of spaces, then divide the wall width by that count. Example: 148-inch wall at ~16 inches → 9 spaces → 16.4 inches exact spacing. The calculator shows this adjusted figure.
Do I put battens at the wall ends?+
Yes — standard layout starts and ends with a batten at each wall edge (or against the adjoining wall/trim), with evenly spaced battens between. That is why a wall with N spaces needs N+1 battens.
